'Where The Wild Things Are' to be rewritten and reshot

wtwta_new2.jpg

Warner Bros. has apparently decided to take Dave Eggers off, reshoot and perhaps even rewrite the long anticipated 'Where The Wild Things Are'-movie, which we've written about before.

Why? Because the screenings made kids cry... Well, fuck you, WB - you just made me cry. (Since when did this need to be a kids' movie, anyway?!)

The release date is pushed back to October 2009. Me, I'm waiting for the directors cut. (Via The Skinny)

New Way To Own A Mobile Phone

Linc 01

New mobiles with updated technologies come out every year so why are we stuck in a model that forces encourages us to buy instead of leasing?

That's the idea behind the Linc, a concept mobile phone and platform by Greener Grass. You sign a contract and they send you a phone. A year from now you send it back for the latest and greatest. Kinda sorta similar to what some companies allow now with trade-ins except your old Linc actually gets recycled, like all of it. This model demonstrates a sustainable cradle-to-cradle solution instead of our current cradle-to-waste system.

Would you be into it? I think Kitsune Noir is.

Robot Will Learn To Speak

Icub-Bot-1

In 4 years time, that robot dubbed iCub (seriously tho) will reach some level of cognitive intelligence. At least that's what A.I. researchers at the University of Plymouth hope. The 3 foot tall humanoid baby (not a bear) will develop language and basic motor skills. They promise nothing sinister; just another study on how babies learn language.

A Chino I'd Wear

Chinotacs 01

I despise Chinos. Yes I know they are the American staple but their blandness makes me feel bored and clothes shouldn't do that. But the 2-tacs chino by B Yoshida is totally up my alley.

Nothing riveting here except for that big pouch. The easiest way to make me like something I traditionally hated is "make it functional." My only issue is the sizing; small and medium only. Damn the Japanese for their svelte frames and damn me for my meaty American bred body.

I Want To Climb

Mobius-Climber

Have you been to a kid's playground lately? I'm talking about those new ones. They have molded astroturf with big pillowy mounds to jump on. The slides take longer than 2 seconds to go thru. Monkey bars have been replaced by rock climbing structures!

I want the Mobius Climber for my backyard. This looks so much fun. I'm not even worried about falling because who cares when you're having as much fun as those kids!

P.S. I need to get a backyard first.

Board room meetings are kind of boring. A bunch of people hunched over the table spitting out random ideas, speaking over each other, being anything but productive. The Sensor Squid aims to change all that by making the collaborative spirit fun. Siafu Low

One of the new miracle materials is a magnetized oil called magneclay. By using controlled electric and magnetic fields, magneclay can take on almost any shape. Designer Jonathan Lucas uses this technology in his Siafu concept, a tablet designed for people with vision loss and impairment.

The tablet can display brail, create tactile surface imagery, and even bring up dynamic menus for a revolutionary interface.

Ripple Faucet

As if designers haven't made some faucets difficult enough to use, designer Smith Newman & Touch 360 Studio felt they should take it a step further. The Ripple faucet has a magnetized ball that controls temperature and water pressure in relation to its position from the center. Hot and cold water flow from two separate channels meeting in the middle for the perfect mix.

Just make sure you don't lose the ball. More at Yanko Design.

Will Wright Explains The Care Bears

The Care Bears are cool, got that? They're creatures of unconditional love, live way above the Earth in a place called Care-a-lot. They have cousins called the Care Bear cousins although they're not Bears at all. In fact they live below the Care Bears in the Forest of Feelings. The Care Bears shoot rainbow particle weapons from their stomachs and can combine to form some death star-like weapon. If that's not enough, the Care Cousins join in and add a sonic boom. Together they enslave the stars.

God the 80's were great!

P.S. If you're wondering who Will Wright is. Why, he's only the person behind small titles like SimCity, SimEarth, SimAnts, The Sims, and a very small upcoming title called SPORE.

A Green Car

Playsam-Miljobil

I'm a Playsam collector, well sorta. I have the white and black versions of this car. Although the company swears up and down their simple wooden toys are for kids, I've only seen adults with them, especially since they cost $40-60 each.

But that's neither here nor there. Playsam wants you to know it's green now and to celebrate, this April you'll be able to pick up the Playsam Miljobil. The wood comes from recycled beechwood, the lacquer and paints are non-toxic, and the packaging has gone from the slick black Apple-esque packaging to plain brown fiber.

So who wants to buy me one?

New Meaning To Mile High

Mile-Tower

Standing over 5,000 feet, the proposed MILE tower in Jeddah City Saudi Arabia will someday claim the coveted title of world's tallest building. Although technically we can build as high as we want, other variables prevent skyscrapers from every going this tall. Issues like transport, safety, and evacuation.

But that's not gonna stop the investors in this project. If anything it's more a symbol of power and wealth in the Middle East. Still this is chump change compared to Japan's proposed XSEED.

Glowing Bamboo

Those newbie ID graduates from METU are at it again. Designer Sevcan Yardim is totally proud of her Bamboo Lights, a sustainable lighting concept. She envisages gardens lit up with this very eco-friendly alternative to lamp posts. Illuminated by small LEDs, the whole thing looks like an organic light saber, which may or may not be a good thing. I'd probably try to dig one up to test out my non-existant Jedi skills.

Squeeze This

Softphone

ID people have it tough. They have to forecast the future based on current trends; not an easy job. That's why we always see concepts stretching the bounds of our imaginations. It can be difficult separating what's real from fantasy so here's a hip-tip. In general look for a commonality and that's probably what we'll see hit mass 10-20-30 years from now.

One example are flexible electronics. They come in every form via a designer's imagination so we can be sure our electronics will be flexible in some way in the future. One example is a Soft Phone by Qian Jiang. In lieu of a traditional screen, there's a electric cellulose fabric stretched between rings. The fabric registers deformations as input so just about anything from typing, dialing, to squeezing can be used for navigation. Fascinating concept really.

Celebs Diluting Fashion Design

Dgguys

Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana are tired of the number of fashion shows each season and that number is increasing. When asked by Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera about the situation, they had this to say;

"A senseless circus. There should be fewer events of higher quality."

I have to agree with them. This season in Milan, the number of shows has exploded to 103. It seems fashion is under attack by celebrities who think they can design. Excuse me but fashion design is a skill, one whose technical executions are only as good as its creative origins. All the money in the world will only make your line hot for the moment, but to have some relevance in history? Don't get your hopes up. Leave the big fashion shows to the real designers and stick to trade shows instead.

U.S. Poison And Vietnam's Suffering

Agentorange

A 3rd generation of Vietnamese are suffering deformities caused by US chemical warfare, specifically Agent Orange and the US Government still refuses to admit it.

Every single independent investigation into the U.S. led spraying of toxins over jungles in Vietnam have come to the same conclusions - detrimental changes to swathes of rain forest that once blanketed the country are not the only victims. The toxins initially sprayed at "military targets" found its way into the country's water supply and now affects nearly 1 million people.

The Vietnamese government estimates it will only cost 60 million dollars to clean up the toxins. The U.S. has agreed to only pay 3 million.

As our country stands on the precipice of leadership change, I hope we can envisage a future where war is only used in self defense, and the immediate ban on all nuclear and biological weapons.

Air Drying The Dyson Way

Dyson, the company behind those super vacuums and hand dryers are at it again, this time with drying clothes. We all know electric/gas dryers use up boatloads of energy, which is bad for the wallet, bad for the environment. Hang drying is the only green alternative until now. The Dyson Air-line uses wind and solar energy to air dry your clothes.

I believe it's just a concept for now but the Dyson vacs were once also too and you know how successful that became. The Air-line promises to dry your clothes in the same amount of time using no electricity whatsoever.

Are You A Boomerang Kid?

Parent Trap

A Boomerang Kid is someone who moves back in with their parents after graduating college. The stay can last several months to years. Government figures show that more than half of male Brits in their early 20’s live back at home. The numbers are similar here in the US. Free food, free rent and relative autonomy make it a pretty sweet deal. But piqued parents are having trouble coping and are even turning to helplines for advice.

The study cites massive student debt, difficulty entering the housing ladder, later marrying, and general fear of failure particularly for males as the main reasons.

I moved out when I was 18. When did you?

Bar soap lovers, let me ask you this. Don't you get tired of that last bit, too small to hold, too mushy to get a good lather? It's one of the reasons why I switched to liquid body wash. Fret not because some designers came up with this ingenious contraption called the Soap Bank.

It suction cups to tile, holds bar soap and when that dissipates into small bits, slip it into the mesh net. Makes for an easy lather and makes use of the entire bar.

Check out the Hasbro Room Tech Clock and Room Tech Lamp, the idea is that you set the alarm clock and it will turn on the lamp for you. The Room Tech Clock wakes kids (or adults) up with a bang as it stamps on the bed-side table with its arms. Alternatively users will be able to be wake up by tunes from the radio or their MP3 player. The clock then communicates with the lamp through a wireless link so when the alarm goes off, the lamp lights up.

Should be available just in time for the holidays.

The Thinning

Greenland10C

There's this perception that global warming is a cyclical event so we're damned if we do, damned if we don't. Problem is when that cycle is unnaturally hyper accelerated, many ecosystems can't adapt and mass extinctions occur. The above image is Greenland today. 10 years ago, this entire area would have been covered in an ice sheet.

It seems the island is finally living up to its name.

Da Vinci Mirrored Images

Leonardouq3

Theorists are suggesting many of Da Vinci's greatest works are hiding secret images when mirrored. The above example looks like the the ancient God Jahveh from the Old Testament.

Magnetic Curtains

Mag-Curtains 01

Designer Florian Krautli is a clever one. His latest project involves Magnetic Curtains. Cut and folded using a scaffolding structure, the curtain sticks to itself forming very architectural peaks and valleys.

A lot of people fail at getting a good night's sleep. It's true and part of the reason why is itchiness. The onset of itchies stems from a number of reasons, most of which can be controlled. Enter the dreamer's material Dermasilk. Billed as the end all of restless nights, this fabric regulates body temperature and allows skin to breath. Developed by the Travelodge hotel chain, the company is currently beta testing would be patrons and should it prove successful, see commercial development.

Birdy For My Bum

birdy_01.jpg

My home is quite the modern sanctuary but I have a problem with it looking too cold. I try to warm things up with textures and lighting but still, all my big pieces are heavy in the clean and modern department. That's why I want the Birdy chair from Homebase. It's as if a swallow weaved it just for me. If I squint my eyes, the chair even looks like a bird. It looks super comfy and the padded seat comes in two color ways. Can't figure out how to buy it tho. It's all in German.

Another one after the jump.

Mint Condition Brand New Apple IIc

Appleiie Mint

How much of an Apple fanboy are you? And by Apple I mean the original computers - pre-Mac. Probably one of the most familiar Apple computers is the Apple II series. Some guy name Dan managed to get his mitts on an unopened mint condition Apple IIc (color) for a cool 2 G's off ebay. He posted a bunch of photos in flickr and boy does it bring back memories.

It's also nice to see even then Apple led the way with thoughtful industrial design. For a computer in its day, the IIc was quite compact. I love how the cooling vents on the CPU and monitor look more design than functional which is key for a great design. Even the packaging and those ultra rare Apple stickers are a sight to see.

Living Wonderland

Yeon-Winderland

As a designer I often argue kids have the best designs. They are all at once imaginative, new, exciting, exotic, and unabashed by typical adult sensitivities. Children first begin to showcase this ability by the time they start drawing. Artist Yeon Doo Jung took some of those illustrations and brought them to life in an exhibition called Wonderland. The design of a child, execution of a grown up. Flawless and creative.

CFDA GQ Party

Cfdagq-02

While the rest of the country was off doing the Superbowl thing, fashion's in crowd gathered for the CFDA (Council of Fashion Designer America) party thrown by GQ. Onlookers drank and snacked while models posed on a platform to be gawked up.

One thing I noticed models are trained to know when a camera is pointing at them. They instinctually turn and look. It's like a sixth sense or something.

More pics after the jump. Thanks Frills.

Redesign Dosages

pill_design.jpg

This story is about my dog. His name is Miko and he's been on a myriad of meds to treat his allergies. For the most part he's allergic to grass (certain kinds) and some kinds of pollen which sucks for a dog since they love being outside. The symptoms come up as hair loss and itching which can lead to secondary infections. I tried everything until my Vet agreed to put him on Atopica, an allergy medication that works miracles.

My only gripe are the dosage adjustments. Miko starts off by taking very high amounts, slowly tapering off until he gets down to 1 pill a day. He's already taking vitamins and fish oil caps so I'm constantly shoving things down his throat multiple times a day. I feel bad for him and wish there were a more streamline way of delivering adjusted dosages. So the above image is an example of how I'd like to see some meds packaged.

BTW, Miko is all better now.

Mobile Phone's Best Friend

mcube-1.jp

Man has his dogs and mobile phones could have something like the MCube, a peripheral that extends the capabilities of your phone. It's a wireless charger, bluetooth stereo, and information display. Simple place your mobile phone nearby to wirelessly recharge and stream music to the MCube via bluetooth. It'll also display basic information from your phone like caller ID and text messages.

Just a concept for now but none of the technologies it proposes is beyond the reach of today. Expect to see something like this in the near future.

Nintendo DS Treasure Hunt

treasure_quest.jpg

Everyday from 10AM-4PM until February 19th, Nintendo DS owners will gather on a tiny island off the coast of Tokyo to participate in the ultimate treasure hunt! Gamers only need register, show up, download the free Treasure Quest game and use it to locate items hidden throughout the island.

It's an awesome mix of real vs virtual worlds. Treasure Quest consists of puzzles you have to complete in order to receive clues. The game makes use of the DS's wireless capabilities to make check-ins and to obtain on-screen scenery matching real world environments. Considering every kid, mom, dad, granny, and dog has a DS in Japan, this treasure hunt could be massive.

Of the three big game companies Nintendo stands out from the bunch as the weird kid, creative and following his own path. Sometimes you appreciate him, other times you just think he's totally off his rocker. The latest round of patents from Nintendo reveals a slew of Wii-mote accessories. Everything from a bike to a helmet, and my favorite... a teddy bear!
